My name is Alex Hastings. I am both a news magazine editor and a student at Arizona State University. By bringing the culmination of my training and experience to bear, I am hoping to continue my personal and professional development while maintaining my goal of being a life-long learner.
I have found that my unique experience as a police officer (including teaching report writing and being a field training officer) combined with growing up in the newspaper business give me a different insight into the editing process and journalism, in general. My goal is to help my writers develop themselves professionally, learn how to be better writers, and provide content for the readers and consumers of the magazine we work for and the community we serve.
While working in law enforcement, I specialized in traffic enforcement and drugs. I am a court-certified Drug Recognition Expert, a NHTSA DUI/SFST Instructor (fancy term for teaching other cops how to evaluate DUI drivers), and a RADAR/LIDAR Operator. My real passion is working with those who suffer from drug addiction and getting them the help they need.
